Physical Therapy Continuing education - ACL Reconstruction Surgery - Call time Hamstring Graft

Physical Therapists spend much time in Physical Therapy continuing education courses studying to rehab patients after ACL treatments, but rarely due we have taught about the medical operation itself. We recently interviewed an orthopedic surgeon to invite him some questions about the use of the hamstring graft indiana ACL reconstruction surgery. Here are some of his answers.

PhysicalTherapyContinuingEducation: So to summarize on the use of hamstring graft in ACL medical operation, the biggest advantage in our hamstring graft would you should only say, I think you noted earlier, that it rrs definitely an easier rehab period take pleasure in the less pain. Are they the both major points, or does the unit use other?

ACL Surgeon: I think the advantages are that it's a very strong graft that intend actually, bio-mechanically, when you double up the two strands of the hamstring and basically employ a four strand graft this is usually a stronger graft initially than the patella tendon. It actually now has stronger fixation. It is not quite as painful as taking the patella tendon and his awesome rehab I think is initially a bit easier. I think with time that account balances. And the results now clinically are pretty much patella tendon.

So, I think you'll find of advantages. It is definitely smaller incision as necessary, so that may can be found in effect, particularly with people that are conscious of cosmesis. But then, as we know, that's not your factor, but to some which can be.

PhysicalTherapyContinuingEducation: Fantastic. Let's talk additional about the graft and these fixation. When we say we make use of the hamstring, what specifically to make sure you use? And then they've already fixation, you mentioned as well as was some advancement in your fixation. Could you just expand on that sort of too?

ACL Surgeon: The grafts we typically use for hamstring range from the gracillis and the semitendinosus, and these are tn post office long tendons that attach to some of the hamstring muscles. If you really can occur, there are numerous hamstring muscles in the back examples of the leg, so you still need many hamstring tendon muscular tissue left, even after you run two.

So, these long tendons plain and simple are such length that you can double them over and possess adequate length to reconstruct the ACL. So, we double them over together with the size of that can fit through a round tube anywhere from six-and-a-half millimeters all the way to eight millimeters in sizing, and really it actually offers more surface area and majority a graft than say almost ACL graft, which is a different sort of graft. Actually, I'm dissatisfied, I should say a short ACL patella tendon graft, such as more of a - it doesn't necessarily quite fill up the diameter of a tube. It's more for the flatter graft, although rather strong. So, the tendons we use are those.

The fixation, there's a lot of how of fixating a hamstring muscle graft. There's basically a point fixation used with screws. You will use pins that go on the bone, and these goes through these or caught around these. There usually are what we call revocation type fixation, where the graft is looped on your very heavy duty type rope suture yet there's an implant that encircles the end of the remainder bone, and these are implanted as of this and are terrifically stable fixation, and then fixed on the other guitar end with either an assortment of a screw, a washer dryer, or some type of implant past the tibia. So, the fixation has truly developed along the many now is very highly effective. In fact, is stronger in contrast to the patella tendon.
